Four-time African Footballer of the Year, Samuel Eto’o, has successfully appealed his exclusion from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee elections. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled in his favor, clearing the path for him to contest in the upcoming CAF elective congress set to take place in Cairo next week.
Eto’o, currently serving as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), was initially disqualified by CAF’s governance committee in January. The committee did not disclose specific reasons for his exclusion, but the former Cameroon striker had faced disciplinary actions in the past year, which may have influenced the decision.
In 2023, FIFA imposed a six-month ban on Eto’o, preventing him from attending national team matches. The sanction followed allegations that he verbally abused match officials during the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Additionally, CAF had suspended Eto’o earlier in the year over an investigation into possible ethical breaches related to his role as an ambassador for a betting company.
Despite these challenges, Eto’o remained determined to fight for his place in CAF’s leadership. His appeal to CAS proved successful, reinforcing his position as a key figure in African football administration. With the elections set for Wednesday in Cairo, all eyes will be on Eto’o as he seeks to shape the future of football on the continent.
