Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has announced that the state is fully prepared to host the 2026 National Sports Festival. The governor revealed that his administration is upgrading key sporting facilities, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Games Village in Awgu, to world-class standards. These improvements are not only aimed at meeting the demands of the event but also at fostering sports development within the state.
Speaking at his investiture ceremony as President of the Enugu Sports Club, Governor Mbah highlighted that these upgrades align with the state’s broader economic vision. The governor emphasized that his government’s strategic efforts, which include the development of sports infrastructure, are designed to boost the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, attract over three million tourists, and generate thousands of jobs for the youth.
Reflecting on the state’s achievements over the past 21 months, Governor Mbah noted an increase in domestic revenue through the use of technology to reduce leakages and revitalize dormant assets. He expressed confidence that Enugu would exceed its internally generated revenue (IGR) target of ₦600 billion for 2025, a key part of funding capital development projects aimed at reducing poverty and improving living standards.
Governor Mbah also reiterated that the administration has not raised taxes but has instead widened the tax net, fixed revenue leakages, and revived dormant industries to attract investments. He emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating poverty through these initiatives.
In his address, Mbah praised the Enugu Sports Club for its significant role in the state’s development since its establishment in 1929. He also recognized the outgoing chairman, Sir Victor Atuonwu, and the club’s executive for their efforts in remodeling the clubhouse. He promised continued support for the club in its mission to promote recreation, social cohesion, and community well-being.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime, former Minister of Information Chief Nnia Nwodo, and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Bartho Okolo.
