Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a statement issued on March 10, 2025, El-Rufai announced his departure from the APC, citing concerns over the party’s leadership and direction.
“Today, I submitted my resignation from the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately. After extensive consultations, I have decided to join the SDP as the platform for my future political engagements.”
The former governor expressed disappointment with the APC’s current leadership, stating that the party has strayed from its founding principles. He revealed that despite raising concerns privately and publicly, the ruling party has failed to address internal issues.
“I have worked tirelessly for the APC’s success in 2015, 2019, and 2023, believing in its progressive ideals. However, recent developments prove that those in control lack the will to fix the party’s problems.”
El-Rufai highlighted his achievements in Kaduna, including advancements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation. However, he criticized the APC’s treatment of its members, saying the party had sidelined its key stakeholders.
With his move to SDP, El-Rufai aims to unite opposition forces against the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I invite all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in the SDP to create a strong and credible alternative that will make Nigeria a beacon of pride for Africa and the Black Race.”
His defection marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, setting the stage for intense political battles in the coming years.
