The Edo State Government is deeply concerned about the growing insecurity caused by armed thugs and criminal elements linked to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). These individuals, who were heavily armed before the 2024 Edo Governorship Election, have refused to surrender their weapons, posing a significant threat to public safety.
It is on record that former Governor Godwin Obaseki, before the last election, openly declared that “Nigeria would burn.” This statement was not a mere political remark but a calculated threat, reinforced by the systematic arming of thugs and touts. Many of these individuals were absorbed into the Edo State Security Network under the previous administration and are now in possession of over 5,000 illegal firearms, which they are using to perpetrate crimes, including robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks.
The Edo State Government has credible intelligence that PDP leaders, who previously controlled these armed groups, have refused to assist in disarming them. Instead, they continue to shield these criminals while they terrorize innocent citizens. Worse still, reports indicate that PDP operatives are stockpiling additional arms in preparation for possible violence should their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, fail to secure victory at the Tribunal.
Given these developments, the Edo State Government calls on security agencies to intensify their efforts in tracking down these armed criminals and their sponsors. Those responsible for fueling insecurity must be identified, investigated, and brought to justice.
No individual, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law. Under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, Edo State will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize its peace and security. The government urges law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in recovering all illegal arms and ensuring that those involved in orchestrating violence are held accountable.
The safety and well-being of the people of Edo remain Governor Okpebholo’s top priority. His administration is committed to ensuring that politically motivated violence has no place in the state.
