Akpabio Denies Harassment Allegations as Senate Refers Petition for Investigation

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has firmly denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The allegations, which have sparked national attention, were addressed by Akpabio during the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday following a week-long recess.

Dismissing the accusations, Akpabio stated, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”

However, shortly after his remarks, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan invoked Order 40, formally accusing the Senate President of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She subsequently sought permission to present her petition before the chamber.

Following the heated exchange, the Senate decided to refer the petition to its Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, tasking it with a thorough investigation into the matter. The committee has been directed to review the allegations as soon as possible.

Reactions and Implications

The allegations have ignited widespread discussions both within political circles and among the general public. Supporters of Akpabio emphasize his past record and recognition for gender inclusivity, while others argue that the matter should be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

Political analysts believe the outcome of the committee’s review could have significant implications for the Senate’s reputation and the broader conversation around gender-based misconduct in Nigeria’s political sphere.

As the nation awaits the findings of the Ethics Committee, many are calling for transparency and fairness in handling the case.
