The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal annexation of Nigerian land by Cameroon, following concerns over the loss of ancestral communities and oil-rich territories. A nine-member ad-hoc committee, led by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has been set up to probe the matter and ensure Nigeria’s territorial integrity is protected.
Background of the Dispute
The Senate’s decision stems from a motion sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North, who highlighted the consequences of a 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment. This ruling resulted in Nigeria losing sixteen ancestral communities and 2,560 oil wells in Akwa Ibom State. Lawmakers have expressed concerns that the implementation of the ruling has been one-sided and unfairly executed.
Lawmakers Call for Action
Several senators voiced their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs and urged for a reassessment of the ICJ ruling. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo South emphasized the importance of reporting the situation to the United Nations Convention to seek redress.
Lawmakers from other affected states, including Cross River, Adamawa, and Ogun, also raised similar concerns about encroachments on their territories. Among those who contributed to the debate were:
- Senator Asouquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South)
- Senator Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East)
- Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North)
- Senator Neda Bernards Imasuen (Edo South)
- Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West)
- Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central)
- Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin
The Way Forward
The Senate resolved to direct the ad-hoc committee to urge President Bola Tinubu to take immediate steps to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty. This includes securing the over 2,560 oil wells within the disputed mangrove islands in Akwa Ibom State.
With growing concerns over Nigeria’s territorial integrity, this Senate probe is expected to bring national and international attention to the issue. Many citizens are hopeful that a fair and decisive resolution will be reached to protect Nigeria’s lands and resources.
