Senate President Akpabio Seeks Stronger Ties with Cuba, Praises Its Role in Africa’s Liberation

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called for closer ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Cuba. During a meeting with Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, on Monday in Abuja, Akpabio also paid tribute to Cuba’s contributions to Africa’s liberation struggles, particularly during the fight against apartheid.

Speaking at the reception, Akpabio emphasized that the visit was more than a diplomatic courtesy—it was a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted historical bonds between Nigeria and Cuba. He highlighted that these ties were forged through shared struggles for justice and sovereignty and should now be translated into mutual economic and developmental progress.

“This visit should mark not only a renewal of Nigerian-Cuban friendship but also the beginning of an even stronger alliance—one that transforms our shared history into shared progress, our solidarity into economic strength, and our struggles into lasting victories,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate President also commended Cuba for its remarkable achievements in medicine, acknowledging the global impact of Cuban doctors who continue to make significant contributions to healthcare worldwide. He recalled Cuba’s historic support for Africa, recognizing its unwavering commitment to justice and liberation on the continent.

On his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla expressed gratitude on behalf of the Cuban government and people for Nigeria’s continued support and solidarity. He emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of culture, education, scientific research, health, and genetic engineering. According to him, enhancing cooperation in these fields would benefit both nations and deepen the bonds between their peoples.

With this renewed engagement, Nigeria and Cuba aim to build a more dynamic partnership that fosters economic growth, knowledge exchange, and cultural collaboration for their mutual advancement.
